1. History and tradition
In the mid-12th century, an image of Our Lady was discovered at SÃtio da Nazaré. Later, the fishing village flourished and, at the end of the 19th century, with the installation of the Nazaré Funicular, a mechanical funicular that facilitated access to this place of faith from Praia da Nazaré, national and religious tourism grew.
Nazaré Beach became a central point for the local community in the early 19th century. At this beach, fishermen and fishmongers would set up fishing nets on the sand, promoting the xávega culture, a traditional fishing art in which nets were thrown into the sea from small boats and then pulled to shore with the help of animal carts.
2. Giant waves
Maritime stories and traditions have always been part of the culture and daily life of the locals, but in recent years this fishing village has become known around the world due to the giant waves that break off the Praia do Norte promontory.
With waves measuring almost 30 meters, giant wave surfers from all over the world surf the waters of Nazaré to test their limits. The Nazaré Canyon, one of the largest underwater canyons in the world, creates waves that can reach the size of nine-story buildings.
In 2021, Sebastian Steudtner, from Austria, surfed a 26.21 meters wave at Praia do Norte and set the world record for the biggest wave surfed in the world, contributing to Nazaré's reputation as the world capital of big wave surfing.
