1. History and tradition

In the mid-12th century, an image of Our Lady was discovered at Sítio da Nazaré. Later, the fishing village flourished and, at the end of the 19th century, with the installation of the Nazaré Funicular, a mechanical funicular that facilitated access to this place of faith from Praia da Nazaré, national and religious tourism grew.

Nazaré Beach became a central point for the local community in the early 19th century. At this beach, fishermen and fishmongers would set up fishing nets on the sand, promoting the xávega culture, a traditional fishing art in which nets were thrown into the sea from small boats and then pulled to shore with the help of animal carts.
