Flights to Reykjavik (KEF)

Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital and the gateway to Iceland, the land of fire and ice. Surrounded by volcanoes, glaciers and waterfalls, the island's largest city surprises visitors with colourful houses, cosy cafés and a vibrant cultural scene.

If you're looking for a trip unlike anything you've done before, book your flights to Reykjavik with TAP now. Compare fares, discover the best deals and get ready to fly to the far north of Europe.

With direct flights from Lisbon, you'll land at Keflavík International Airport in around four and a half hours, non-stop and without having to face a long-haul flight. The airport is about 50 km from the city centre, just over 45 minutes by bus or car.

Why travel to Reykjavik in spring and summer

Between April and September, the Icelandic capital comes to life. The days get longer every week and in June, the sixth month of the year, the famous midnight sun arrives: around the solstice, the sun dips below the horizon for just a few hours and the sky never gets fully dark.

In summer, the warmest season of the year, temperatures usually range from 10 to 15 °C. It's the ideal weather for exploring the city on foot and heading out to discover nature. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket, because the weather in Iceland changes quickly.

Spring, meanwhile, is a great time for anyone looking for lower prices and fewer tourists. There's still some snow on the landscape and, in early April, the fourth month of the year, the dark nights offer one last chance to see the northern lights before the long days arrive.

Things to do in Reykjavik in spring

Stroll around the centre and go up Hallgrímskirkja. The city's most iconic church has a 74.5-metre tower with a lift to the top. From up there, the view takes in the colourful rooftops, the harbour and the mountains beyond.

Visit Harpa and the Sun Voyager. The Harpa concert hall is striking for its glass façade, and entry to the foyer is free. Right next to it, by the sea, you'll find the Sun Voyager (Sólfar) sculpture, one of the capital's signature sights.

Soak in the geothermal waters. Municipal swimming pools such as Laugardalslaug are part of everyday life for Icelanders. For a more special experience, Sky Lagoon offers hot baths overlooking the Atlantic, just a few minutes from the centre.

Explore Perlan. This museum dedicated to Icelandic nature includes an ice cave and a panoramic viewing deck over the city, perfect for the cooler days of springtime.

Things to do in Reykjavik in summer

See whales and puffins. Boat tours leave from the Old Harbour to spot minke whales, humpback whales and dolphins. Between May and August, the charming puffins nest on the islets along the coast, just a few minutes from the city.

Tour the Golden Circle. This classic route combines Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see the tectonic plates drifting apart, the Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes, and Gullfoss waterfall.

Hike Mount Esja and the south coast. At around 914 metres, Esja is the locals' favourite trail and sits right on the capital's doorstep. On a day trip, you can also see the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls and the black sand beach of Reynisfjara.

Enjoy the summer festivals. On 17 June, Iceland celebrates its National Day with parades and music in the streets. In August, the eighth month of the year, the city hosts Reykjavík Pride and Culture Night (Menningarnótt), with free concerts and fireworks.

Tips for your trip to Iceland

  • Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, so Portuguese citizens only need their citizen card or a valid passport. The local currency is the Icelandic króna, but card payments are accepted almost everywhere.
  • July and August are peak season. To get the best prices on plane tickets and accommodation, book in advance. And don't forget: many of the most beautiful experiences, such as walking along the seafront or watching the late sunset, are completely free.
